The project

Innovation supporting local trade

Mercado Central and Mercado del Puerto are part of the commercial and social life of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Like other traditional markets, they face the challenge of adapting to changing shopping habits and competition from large retailers and digital platforms.

Sagulpa supported the markets' digitalisation through the ERDF Canary Islands 2021–2027 programme to improve management and the visitor experience. The project introduces technology into these historic spaces while preserving their identity and day-to-day activity.

THE CHALLENGE

The solution needed to be installed without intrusive construction work, support new services and preserve public ownership of the data, with the ability to integrate it into the city's Digital Twin and municipal open data portal.

The solution

275 devices connected to Aritium Platform

Aritium designed and deployed a private LoRaWAN network in each market using its Aritium Box units. These communications enclosures combine a LoRaWAN gateway, a mini UPS and a smart plug, with backup power to maintain communications during power cuts.

The project includes 275 IoT devices to monitor footfall, detect motion and door openings, measure light, temperature, humidity and air quality, and track bin fill levels using ultrasonic sensors. Geolocation beacons and information screens complete the deployment.

All the information is brought together in Aritium Platform, where devices can be monitored remotely and data viewed in real time. Long-range, low-power wireless connectivity simplifies installation and allows services to expand without replacing the deployed infrastructure.

Benefits

Better market management and new visitor services

Understanding how the markets are used

Data on footfall, environmental conditions and visitor behaviour helps plan services and understand how spaces are used.

Adapting waste collection to demand

Measuring bin fill levels makes it possible to adjust collection schedules and prevent overflows.

Optimising lighting and climate control

Occupancy, door status and environmental conditions allow the facilities to adapt to how the market is actually used.

Bringing information and offers closer to the public

Screens, dynamic signage and personalised offers make communication with visitors easier and create new opportunities for local businesses.

Integrating data with city services

The solution preserves public ownership and traceability of the information while enabling integration with the city's wider digital systems.
