Viamed Salud and Aritium pioneer LoRaWAN network deployment in hospitals
The collaboration has brought LoRaWAN sensor networks to every facility in the group, with applications that improve oversight of the buildings and support the safety and comfort of patients and staff.

The project
Digital transformation in hospital operations
Viamed Salud has embraced IoT technology to improve the operation and maintenance of its facilities. Together with Aritium, the group has deployed private LoRaWAN networks that address different hospital needs through the same infrastructure.
The collaboration covers temperature and environmental monitoring, water leak detection and alerts for potential emergencies. These applications give teams real-time information to oversee the facilities and respond to incidents.
Extend monitoring to every facility in the group through a network that could support new services as the hospitals' needs evolved.
The solution
One network for multiple applications
LoRaWAN's long range and low power consumption made it easier to install sensor networks across all Viamed facilities. In January 2024, the group had nearly 300 connected devices generating around 30,000 messages a day.
Aritium processes this information and makes it available through dashboards, alerts and notifications. Staff can check product storage conditions, understand the status of each space and receive alerts when a situation needs their attention.
Sensors
Temperature, environmental conditions, occupancy and events across your facilities.
LoRaWAN networks
Private connectivity deployed across the group's facilities.
Aritium Platform
Processed data, monitoring dashboards, alerts and notifications.
Benefits
Technology supporting healthcare
Cold chain monitoring
Temperature monitoring helps oversee products that require specific storage conditions and detect deviations.
Comfort for patients, families and staff
Occupancy and air quality data allows ventilation and climate control to adapt to conditions in each space.
Alerts for hospital teams
Alerts and notifications make it easier to monitor facilities and respond to events such as a water leak.
New services on existing infrastructure
The deployed network allows new applications to be added without installing a separate communications system for each one.
A project recognised by LoRa Alliance
LoRa Alliance recognised the pioneering nature of Aritium's deployment at Viamed Salud. Its Chair and CEO, Donna Moore, highlighted the value of this collaboration for healthcare and the ease of adding new applications once the network is in place.
The collaboration also prompted work on new initiatives involving the consumption and administration of medical oxygen, as well as noise monitoring. These developments were among the next steps planned for 2024, with the aim of continuing to improve patient care and comfort.
